Friday nights on the Baton Rouge levee are flaming hot!  No, not the temperature (well, yes it can be.) The flames and colors are the Baton Rouge Fire Guild practicing their artistry.  The group of young local flow artists meet Wednesday and Friday nights to practice and perform for the public.

Aren’t the colors amazing?

They use flaming staffs, lotus fans, fire hoops and LED poi to create magical lighted designs in the air.

LED poi create mesmerizing designs

Flow artists use dance, yoga and ancient movements as they skillful manipulate a variety of props. As they move they connect with the flow of their mind and body to reach “the zone”.  The zone is that place where an individual’s creative expression is focused, energized and fully engaged in the moment and activity.

Using slow shutter speeds to capture their beauty, the flowing patterns come to life.  Each person expresses their art and skill level differently.  Some are very elaborate and others more conservative in their flow.  Watching some of the more experienced artists move with the fire staff like gymnasts is a little nerve-wracking, but they always seem to have control.

Beautiful

There are other Fire Guilds across the country.  A Google search may uncover one in your area.  If you visit Baton Rouge, take a walk on the riverwalk (levee) and enjoy some fire flow art on Friday night. They gather on the levee at the end of S. Florida St.

A fire guild? Flow artists? Those are new terms to me as well. But oh, the images you captured make me want to see one as well. I’ll take your advice and google it, hopefully there’s one nearby. How did you find out about it?

Thanks Linda! They were new to me as well. A friend liked a page for the group in Baton Rouge and I saw it. I started looking for the random words online. The local group schedule events so I know when they will be there. I hope you can find one near you. (something to add to the bucket list! haha)

Thank you Vlad! I love practicing long exposure shots. Not over exposing the light of the flames was the challenge. I want to go again soon, so I can try more. Thanks!
